Be honest – when you were in high school, every time your parents had friends over they would ask you the dreaded questions about where your life was heading, and today’s teens are no different. They regularly are asked questions like:
“What is your life plan?”
“What are you doing after high school?”
“What do you want to do when you grow up?”
In today’s high pressure society where success is easily seen in the windows of social media, students face enormous pressure in every aspect of life. They are stressed about grades, tests, self-image, social media presence, hobbies, interests, and regular teen social life. Adding admissions testing, college applications, deciding which college to attend, comparing their achievements and choices to their friends’, and being told that their actions and decisions now impact the rest of their life onto an already overflowing plate? That’s enough to overwhelm even the most cool-headed overachiever. Even on top of all this is the fact that your child is still a teenager. They are still developing into maturity, and they exist in a world where it is increasingly challenging for them to recognize their value. As their parent, you see it clearly, and know you only want the best for them.
So, how do you help your child realize their goals? How do you empower your child to find a direction in their academic life? How do you get them excited about the future? How do you do it without seeming controlling or overbearing?
At La Jolla Learning Works, we’ve decided that it’s time to shift the conversation to this question: “What career path is the best fit for your child’s personality and interests?” In other words – we help your child examine the possibilities, and we help them find their own answers. We call this Career Interest Coaching.
How Does it Work?
Career Interest Coaching is a 13-lesson program where your child works one-on-one with our educational coaches in career exploration activities, where they can:
– Explore their interests, and how they relate to educational subjects, and how those can translate into future college majors and career paths.
– Learn more about themselves, identify their self-worth and translate that into their academic studies.
– Figure out optimum work environments to encourage greater productivity, less procrastination and translate that into more efficient, confident academic work.
– Interview local professionals in their fields of interest to get first hand accounts of “what being a grown up” in their field of interest could look like for them.
– Through this self-exploration and with the aid of our resources, work on a path of setting their own goals for their future, and identify practical, straightforward methods of managing their future to reduce stress and the feeling of overwhelming uncertainty.
How Career Coaching Services Can Benefit Your Child
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 80% of college students enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program change their major at least once.
According to the US Department of Education, 1 in 3 college students will change their major in their first 3 years of enrollment. One in 10 change majors multiple times in the first 3 years.
The highest rate of major change is mathematics and human sciences; a whopping 50% of students who change majors switch from those subjects.
Some of this is down to poor planning. Some of this is the result of the student growing up, or students being exposed to a wider world and finding thoughts and interests they never knew existed in high school because they had never had anyone helping them explore the questions they dreaded.
“How can we help you get an idea of what you want to do?”
“What are you interests? Let’s identify how these fit into academic subjects, and careers beyond them.”
“What interests you about a particular subject? Why?”
